Safe Environment Training for All Volunteers and Staff

Volunteer Requirements are set by the Archdiocese of detroit

Requirements have been updated in 2026

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN - need to recertify every 3 years

  1. Have you taken the Protecting God’s Children Workshop?
  2. NO - I have not previously taken the workshop.
  3. Go to Step 2 - Setting up my NEW Virtus account
  4. YES - I have taken the workshop from Virtus
  5. Virtus recertify training is now required every 3 years
  6. Go to Step 3 - Accessing my EXISTING Virtus account
  7. On your computer enter www.virtus.org into your web browser
  8. Setting up my NEW Virtus account - Create a new account and follow the prompts.  You will sign a Code of Conduct and a Background Check Form.
  9. Background Check Forms are run every 2 years for Volunteers, every year for employees.
  10. Once you create your new account you are given 2 options to take the workshop:  LIVE IN PERSON or LIVE ON ZOOM.  Both require a set time and date to take the workshop.
  11. Key words to know:  Archdiocese - DETROIT, Location - RESURRECTION, Profile - USER, Group - PARISH
  12. Accessing my EXISTING Virtus account - Log in to www.virtus.org using your USER ID/EMAIL and PASSWORD.  NOW YOU CAN ACCESS THE RECERTIFICATION, ONLINE, AT YOUR OWN PACE VERSION OF THE WORKSHOP.
  13. Don’t remember your USER ID, PASSWORD or BOTH?

  15. PLEASE DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT - if you have taken the Protecting God’s Children workshop before, you have an account even if you didn’t set it up.
  16. On your home page you will see a Current Training section.  This is where you will find the current recertifying course.  Click on it and begin.  All these are self-paced courses.
  17. Please email the office to let them know you have completed all volunteer requirements at Office@ResCanton.Org
  18. If you have taken the training and the Safe Environments Coordinator is unable to find your account, please reach out. There are many reasons for this and much easier to figure out over the phone. 734-451-0444
